Art Therapy
A few weeks ago I was in San Diego, California and I “randomly” decided to sign up to a painting workshop. I put randomly in quotes because although I felt like I chose it without any logical reason, I believe I was guided there by spirit. My intuition knew what I needed before I could logically understand why I had made the decision.
In hindsight it always makes sense.
The session was held by Michael and Tish who have amazing energy and created a great vibe for us.
If you’re in SD I highly recommend going to their workshops every Wednesday evening. You can find out more here.
Before the session started Tish kindly gave me and David an intro to the painting room and all the equipment available for us to use during the session. This included things like brushes, cards, palettes, and other cool stuff.
We all got to choose our favourite songs and paint to it during the session.
When the session started I was immediately drawn to putting the paint on my hands and using them to paint straight onto the canvas. It felt primal. It felt childlike. It felt freeing.
The feeling that best describes how the whole experience felt is like being back at nursery (aka kindergarten). A time before any social conditioning had a say on what was right and wrong. Before our minds took over and we felt doubt before taking any action. A time when we were pure, free and open to the wonder and magic of life. A time when we did things just because.
It was deeply healing for me in ways I can’t quite express.
Sometimes a problem in our life doesn’t require the solution we think it does.
Doing an experience like this got me out of me head (for the most part) and connected me to an energy that doesn’t use words. It worked on parts of me that I couldn't access through other standard means.
Today, rather than saying much more I want to share one of the paintings I did that I am proud of.
Sometimes using visual aid to tap into our emotions helps. That’s why today I invite you look take a few minutes to sit with the painting and notice how you feel. Write about it in your journal and see what comes up for you.
If you’d like to share what came up for you in the comments I’d love to hear it.
Ps - since writing this I also wrote a poem inspired by this painting called The Hand That Painted God, which you can read here.
One love,
V
